SELFI – Student Evaluation of Learning and Feedback for Instructors

Your Feedback Matters!

Starting summer 2016, the University of North Dakota began a “phased” launch of the new online course evaluation system, Explorance Blue, along with the new set of feedback questions called student evaluation of learning and feedback for instructors or SELFI, see overview. The SELFI will replace the USAT form (see SETIC’s final report).

The SELFI, with 24 core questions which includes the three open-ended comments from the USAT, provides a method to collect and report student ratings of instruction in areas that are broadly applicable to most classes.

  • Faculty use information from course evaluations to improve their courses and teaching methods, and to determine whether course content is meeting the needs of their students
  • Deans and department chairs review course evaluation data to assess both their faculty, and the value of courses offered in their department.
  • University committees include course evaluation data as part of faculty reviews, to determine promotion and tenure.
