Benchmark Data: Necessary Factors for L&D Success

In this article, Explorance’s John Mattox looks at the best method for measuring the effectiveness of training programs within an organization. To determine whether or not the desired outcome has been reached, there are several ways of measuring a program’s success. One method is the experimental/quasi-experimental approach, which is the most time consuming and resource-intensive. The other method is the comparison-to-standards approach, which collects standard measures from learners and compares them to a benchmark created by aggregating historical performance metrics. In the article, John notes the necessary considerations for benchmark comparisons and how the comparison-to-standards approach is the most practical, scalable, and cost-effective method to collect learning effectiveness data.
