Facilitated by Explorance, the Higher Education Benchmarking Consortium (HEBC) is an initiative designed to help universities assess performance, improve programs, and achieve strategic goals. Founded by Zayed University, Ajman University, and the American University of Sharjah, the HEBC collects valuable insights from participating institutions with 52 indicators across three main categories: Academic, Financial, and Feedback.

The HEBC initiative was designed with 5 goals:

  • Performance Improvement: Compare performance against other institutions, identify areas of improvement, and implement best practices.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and refine strategic plans by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their programs and comparing them with other institutions.
  • Competitive Advantage: Highlighting strengths and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure meeting the required quality standards and complying with the regulations and guidelines set by the relevant accrediting bodies.
  • Resource Allocation: Allocate resources effectively by identifying the areas where you can achieve the best return on investment.

Launched in January 2023, the first data collection occurred in February 2023. Join us as we explore the HEBC’s transformative force, its impactful outcomes, and its role in fostering collaborative success in higher education.

The HEBC’s Potential: Insights from Explorance Bluenotes MENA 2023

In November 2023, the Explorance Bluenotes MENA 2023 attracted thought leaders from various universities, fostering discussions on the evolving landscape of higher education and the importance of amplifying the student voice. During the conference, the Higher Education Benchmarking Consortium participated in a two-fold engagement:

HEBC Informative Session: Insights and Growth Pathways

During this session, led by Mr. Samit Lotlikar from Zayed University, discussions delved into the first data collection, confidentiality agreements, and key takeaways, emphasizing system diversity and the unwavering dedication of the participating institutions.

As the HEBC looks ahead, the spotlight remains on continual enhancement, focusing on delving into program-level indicators and proposing novel metrics. The HEBC actively champions collaboration, with plans to expand benchmarking workshops and enrich program-level indicators in the upcoming year. Ultimately, the session aimed to disseminate methodologies and best practices from its inaugural year, augmenting institutional performance and enriching the student journey through benchmarking.

HEBC’s Private Workshop

A private workshop convened among the participating institutions, facilitating an exchange of ideas and strategic discussions in preparation for the upcoming data collection scheduled for 2024. Hosted by the consortium’s founding members – Zayed University, Ajman University, and the American University of Sharjah – this exclusive gathering was an opportunity to synergize efforts and plan for further advancements.

During this session, the participating institutions unified their efforts, deliberating on future strategies and fine-tuning methodologies to optimize the forthcoming data collection round. The intimate nature of the workshop allowed for in-depth conversations, fostering a shared vision for leveraging benchmarking practices to elevate educational standards across the consortium.

Beyond Numbers: The Transformative Force of Higher Education Benchmarking

Benchmarking transcends raw data; it serves as the cornerstone of informed decision-making, fostering a culture of progress and collaboration in higher education.

Beyond the quantitative metrics, the HEBC embodies a mindset of continuous improvement. It enables the participating universities to evaluate what is measurable and what matters most: student experiences, teaching methodologies, and institutional effectiveness. This broader perspective encourages institutions to refine their approaches, aligning them more closely with evolving educational needs.

Advantages Amplified: Unlocking University Potential with HEBC

The HEBC catalyzes universities’ latent potential by offering a platform beyond conventional evaluation methods. It’s not just about measuring success; it’s about maximizing it.

One of HEBC’s primary advantages is its ability to provide a comprehensive view. Collecting diverse data sets from participating institutions offers a panoramic view of performance, allowing universities to identify strengths and areas for improvement across multiple facets of education.

Moreover, the HEBC serves as a bridge between institutions, fostering a collaborative spirit. It facilitates a sharing culture where universities benchmark their performance against peers and share strategies, innovations, and challenges. This cohesive exchange amplifies the advantages, encouraging the adoption of best practices and developing innovative solutions that benefit the entire educational community.

The HEBC framework isn’t just about assessment; it’s about action. Its insights serve as actionable intelligence, empowering institutions to make informed decisions and implement targeted strategies. This approach ensures that efforts aren’t merely reactionary but proactive, aligning with the evolving needs of students and the educational landscape.

The HEBC’s true power lies in its potential to transform universities into dynamic entities, continuously evolving and adapting to meet the demands of a rapidly changing educational environment.

Pioneers at the Helm: Meet the Founding Members of HEBC

For its first round of data collection back in 2023, the Higher Education Benchmarking Consortium embarked on its transformative journey through the collective vision and collaborative initiative of 24 well-established international institutions. Among these pioneering contributors are Zayed University, Ajman University, and the American University of Sharjah, each playing a vital role in igniting the HEBC’s path toward reshaping higher education practices.

This collaboration for the data collection set for 2024, now comprised of 31 institutions, catalyzes the consortium’s growth. The HEBC’s network is continually expanding, welcoming new partners and perspectives to enrich its collaborative efforts further in reshaping higher education practices on an international scale. The participating institutions include:

Insights to Action: Deconstructing HEBC’s First Data Collection

The consortium’s first round of data collection included 52 indicators across three critical categories: Academic, Financial, and Feedback. This intensive data collection phase encapsulated the multifaceted dimensions of higher education practices.

The consortium gathered diverse data sets from participating institutions, aiming for a panoramic view of educational practices. Carefully curating methodologies ensured inclusivity and relevance, encompassing the dataset’s quantitative metrics and qualitative nuances.

The HEBC is committed to transparency and shared learning and has disseminated these benchmarking data to participants. This wasn’t just data but a catalyst for informed decision-making and targeted strategies within the consortium.

This first data collection, started in 2023, laid the foundation for a culture of data-driven decision-making and collaboration within The HEBC.

Progressing Ahead: The HEBC’s Roadmap to Future Collaborative Success

The consortium is now setting its sights on an ambitious roadmap for the future.

The HEBC is poised for ongoing annual data collection. In the coming years, it intends to refine methodologies and broaden indicators to gain a more comprehensive understanding of global educational practices. This planned annual data collection forms the bedrock of the HEBC’s commitment to fostering deeper collaborations among institutions.

The consortium remains open to welcoming new members into its diverse network. The HEBC’s strategic vision focuses on collecting and sharing data, promoting collaboration and utilizing technology, paving the way for continual enhancements in higher education practices in the years ahead.
